Purple is the night

Purple is an interesting colour. It is the combination of the warmest and coolest colours red and blue and depending on the proportions of these, can be warm or cool, delicate if white is added or overpowering if dark and on mass. Although I wouldn’t like a bedroom painted all in dark purple, I have fond memories of my childhood 70’s room. It had white walls and touches of purple in the blinds, light shade and a dark purple woollen blanket. It lives in my memory as a sun filled happy room and though we moved house and I had to leave it at age ten or eleven I think, I remember it well. I’ve assembled a little collection of purple here for your pleasure.

  1. One of my very favourite colour combinations is in Monets ballet paintings where he uses a juxtaposition of a very beautiful lilac tone with a orange. I remember having a liclac bedroom in my teenage yearsand tthat was in the 70’s!

  2. So pretty! I love how purple can be everything from playful to totally rich and indulgent, depending on the shade. Definitely one of my favourite colours🙂

    • Oh thanks Amb, I love it too! Did I ever tell you my husbands sister is called Amber Fleur? She married a White so is now Amber Fleur White, another favourite colour combination!

      • No, you didn’t! Oh I just love that, what a beautiful name, it sounds like it’s from a fairy-tale!

  3. Purple is the night is truly a sweet piece of work. Cute top your guy brought back for you, I love special gifts like that. I enjoy seeing photos of flowers from around the world that are different than those we grow here in the states. The purple house is charming. being that my studio is painted purple and my house has purple trim, guess you know what my favorite color might be.
    Lovely post,
    xok

    • I just had a look at your blog and the purple and bright colours against the snow look amazing. What I love about the purple house I photographed is the way it shelters in the rather wild looking garden, it’s almost a bit fairytale like. It belongs to a very elderly lady that loves to potter in her garden and I love that she has embraced her love of colour.

  4. I love purple, too. Last winter I bought myself a long purple waistcoat with furry purple pompoms hanging down the front – sounds weirder than it is, but not much🙂 I love your kiribati top, I would totally wear that

  5. Purple is my favorite color. I’ve had a dark purple bedroom – all four walls! The bed had a beautiful velvet purple comforter and small purple pillows in all shades and fabrics. I felt very rich sleeping in that room. I think purple does that to a person, makes them feel rich and lavish. In fact, I’m wearing a purple hoodie right now!

    • Ha ha! I’m very a purple dressing gown that my mum chose for me! A purple bedroom would be lovely and cosy in winter, I think I would have to eat chocolate or grapes in it….

  6. Purple has always been one of my favorite colors, too. I admire someone willing to paint their home with such a bold color choice, I’m not sure I could do it! Found your blog via the Etsy Blog Team🙂

  7. Love your work Jen ! That little owl on the end you can tell is baby and very contented with spoiling he looks too – leaning in towards the others🙂
That echium would be a favourite flower for me !

  8. Purple is a great colour. It always reminds me of the fabulous poem by Jenny Joseph – Warning, When I am an old woman I shall wear purple. I just hope I will be as dishonourable!

  9. Purple is one of my favourites, too! That purple house is outstanding! I’m so glad to see houses that aren’t white, beige, tan or chocolate. But that’s ’cause I love colour . . . love your owls, too, esp. the purple-eyed one. ~ Linne

    • I think it’s a house colour that people love or dislike, it’s not a shrinking violet colour to choose! It makes me smile because it belongs to a very elderly lady who obviously loves colour too, and she has an amazing garden to go with it.

  10. I’m not a fan of purple, except in nature. That purple house would bother me to see often, we have a very vibrant pink color on a house I used to drive by, you could see it more than a block away, it’s like a sore thumb. Saying that, I love the shade of purple in your owl print, just wouldn’t fit in my house.

    • Your house is lovely with it’s cool blues and you’re right, purple would clash. I can understand about a house you can see from a block away! This house sort of nestles in to its garden and looks almost fairytale like.

  11. Purple is probably one of my least favourite colours! I must say though, that you’re pictures have served the colour well….I’m even dreaming of living in a purple house!

    • I think a purple house will certainly bring comments as it’s an unusual colour for a house to be painted. However it’s a very elderly lady who lives in the purple house, she recently had it painted that colour and I love that she chose what made her happy! It makes me smile whenever I see it…

  12. One of my favourite songs from the adolescent era was, “The One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater”.Listen to the lyrics and your life will never be the same again!!

    • I hadn’t heard of “Harold and the Purple Crayon” before so of course being a sticky beak, I had to look him up. I can’t believe I hadn’t come across him earlier. Thank you for introducing us🙂

    • I find it interesting how colour effects us and its symbology. What I find really interesting is how one day I can love a colour and then at another time it can make me feel ill, perhaps reflecting the climate or the mood I’m in.

  13. Thank you for this wander through purple! I had one of those blankets too! Purple is most definitely my colour, in fact being a Melbourne woman all I need is black and purple!🙂
