For Mum

Friends who share my eclectic taste, have sometimes told me I should have done something in Interior decorating and I think I would have loved that. I love putting together little vignettes and arranging and rearranging. The person I learnt this from is my mother and this post is for her. Mum has an amazing talent for getting an old piece of furniture or junk from the side of the road and then turning it into something wonderful that you would never have thought of doing. She also loves making collections and displays that delight the eye. She has a real talent.

I wanted to do this post for my lovely mum because recently, she severely broke her ankle and has to stay in bed for six weeks with her foot elevated (a real hardship for someone who loves getting out in her garden and restoring furniture). The photographs below are of mum and my stepfather’s beach house which I know she is missing very much. You can see her collection of vintage kangaroos and she loves them because sometimes roos will hop through the garden early in the morning. Don’t you just love her gate to nowhere, attached to no fence? Which of course, she found on the side of the road and rescued.

I hope you like this post Mum, you are an inspiration to me.

Carefully created vignettes are one of mum’s pleasures.

Not only am I handsome, but also useful.

  1. What a lovely post Jen ! I bet your Mum will be chuffed to bits and touched by this personal post to her . Six weeks ! That’s a heck of a time to be robbed of getting on with upcycling and thrifting projects … I hope you are supplying endless magazines and so that maybe Mum can rip out articles for new ideas and so on πŸ˜‰ I can vouch for that being a very satisfying way to spend some time lol .
The beach house looks so lovely … and am imagining puzzled Roos looking @ the feature gate !!
Hope MrsJen is back on her feet soon πŸ™‚

    • Tee hee, now you’ve got me picturing the puzzled Roos. πŸ™‚ Mum has a good supply of magazines and my stepfather has organised a new back deck to be built, so she is thinking about how to decorate it.

  2. Jen,

What a beautiful surprise and just at the right time. I had the miseries yesterday and was full of frustration but your comforting words and evocative photographs have reminded me that there is much ahead to look forward to.

My love and thanks for your warm and generous tribute and for being you.

  3. I hope your mother is feeling well soon. I broke my ankle years ago, and was going out of my mind not being able to get around. I was wheel chair bound for almost 6 months. I learned that I needed to keep doing the things I loved and tore the wheel chair apart down to one leg rest to keep the broken one elevated, removed the arms and continued to work on projects as they appeared from friends who knew I needed things to do. Maybe your mother can find something similar to do.

The first thing I noticed about your mother’s home was how comfortable it looks, that just right feel of a home being everything you need and welcoming.

    • Yes she really knows how to make a house a home. I think Mum will be very limited too for the next 6 months. One thing she is thinking of doing is some family tree research, but I think hasn’t felt well enough yet to focus on that. Hopefully, in a few weeks she will feel like starting. I think it will be very interesting for all of us especially for Mum. It will be a bit like being a detective I imagine. Thanks for your good wishes. πŸ™‚

    • I’m very lucky to have her, she always has good advice for me but doesn’t offer it unless I ask! We have fun together visiting charity shops and looking at each other’s collections too.

  4. I’d love to be able to do this thrifty stuff but being a student there is a problem: lack of money, time and space! Maybe i’ll have to keep this in mind for the future. Tell your mum I really like that Kangaroo! πŸ™‚

  5. There’s something about a stand-alone gate– makes you want to walk thru it somehow… : )

It makes sense you’d have a cool mum, Jen– hope she’s feeling much better these days!
